Accident Recovery

The sound of crunching metal is something you never forget.

For the first few seconds after a car accident, your brain essentially shuts down. Adrenaline takes over, and it’s hard to think clearly. That is exactly when people make expensive mistakes—like admitting fault when they shouldn’t, or letting a random tow truck take their car to a storage lot that charges predatory fees.

Deep breath. You are okay.

If you are reading this from the side of the road, or just want to be prepared, here is the no-nonsense guide on exactly what to do immediately after a collision.

1. Safety First (Move It or Leave It?)

If the car is drivable and you are blocking traffic, move it to the shoulder.

There is a common myth that you should “leave the cars exactly where they are for the police.” In a minor fender bender, that is dangerous. You are sitting ducks for secondary accidents. However, if the damage is severe, someone is injured, or the car is leaking fluids, do not touch it. Turn on your hazards, get yourself to safety away from the road, and wait for help.

2. Call 911 and Get a Police Report

Even if the other driver says, “Hey, let’s just settle this with cash,” do not do it.

Without a police report, it is your word against theirs. If they wake up tomorrow with “whiplash” and sue you, you have no official record of what happened. You need that police report number for your insurance claim.

3. Be a Photographer

Before the tow trucks arrive and sweep up the glass, take pictures of everything.

  • The damage to your car.
  • The damage to their car.
  • The license plate of the other vehicle.
  • The street signs or intersection layout.
  • Skid marks on the road.

This is your evidence. Insurance adjusters love photos; they make the claims process significantly faster.

4. Watch What You Say

Be polite, exchange insurance info, and check if everyone is okay. But be careful not to say “I’m sorry” or “I didn’t see you.”

It sounds harsh, but in the eyes of insurance companies, a simple apology can be seen as an admission of guilt. Stick to the facts. Let the police and the adjusters figure out who was at fault.

5. You Have the Right to Choose Your Tow Truck

Here is something most drivers don’t know: You have the legal right to choose who tows your car.

Sometimes, police will call from their “assigned list,” or a random truck might just show up at the scene chasing the accident. You do not have to use them. You can request your preferred towing company.

Why does this matter? Because some predatory towing companies will drag your car to a lot across town and charge you daily storage fees that insurance might not fully cover. You want a local, reputable company that will take your car exactly where you want it—whether that’s your driveway, a body shop, or the dealership.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I have to use the tow truck the police call? No. Unless your car is being impounded for a crime or is causing a massive hazard that needs instant clearing, you have the right to request a specific company. Tell the officer, “I want to use A1 Towing,” and they will usually respect that.

2. Who pays for the accident towing bill? If you have “Collision” coverage, towing is almost always part of the claim. In many cases, we can bill your insurance company directly so you don’t have to pay out of pocket at the scene. If the accident wasn’t your fault, the other driver’s insurance will eventually cover it.

3. My car looks okay, but it won’t start after the crash. Why? Many modern cars have an “inertia switch” or a fuel cut-off sensor that trips during an impact to prevent fires. It shuts off the fuel pump. Even if the car looks fine, it might need a tow to a mechanic to be reset and inspected for hidden frame damage.

4. Can you tow my car directly to a body shop? Yes. In fact, we recommend it. If you have a preferred body shop, we can drop it straight there so repairs can start immediately. If you don’t know where to take it yet, we can tow it to your home or our secure lot while you figure it out.

5. What if the other driver flees the scene? Do not chase them. That is how a bad situation turns into a dangerous one. Stay put, call the police, and give them every detail you remember (car color, make, partial license plate). Your “Uninsured Motorist” coverage should handle the damages, including the tow.
